The University of Wisconsin and its police department have launched an investigation following the online publication of private images and videos of the women's volleyball team that were never intended for public consumption.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Badgers' athletic department released a statement indicating that student-athletes contacted the UW-Madison Police Department after realizing photos they had taken were circulating on social media.

UW Athletics stated, "We are aware that private images and videos of UW volleyball players that were never intended to be released publicly are circulating digitally."

"The unauthorized disclosure is a serious and illegal invasion of the student-athletes' privacy, as well as potential violations of university policy and criminal statutes."

The UWPD is investigating several crimes, including the unauthorized distribution of sensitive photos.

The photos and videos were likely taken after the team won the Big Ten championship last November. One of the photos reportedly shows several members of the squad lifting and posing with their sports bras. The photos were private and were never meant to be shown to the public.

The majority of the images have been removed from the internet.

UW Athletics stated, "Our main goal is to support our student-athletes, and we provide them with the necessary services and resources."

The Washington women's volleyball team currently has a record of 13-3 and is ranked fifth in the nation.
